Women’s Cancer Awareness Day 2010 at PGA National Resort & Spa

PGA National Hosts Women’s Cancer Awareness Day

“One of the greatest weapons against Cancer is awareness of what it is, how to defend against it, how it can be fought – and beaten; the power of knowledge is critical,” says Elaine Solomon, Event Chair.

“Raising cancer awareness is what our event is all about. It’s also great fun with golf, bridge and table games, auctions, and a raffle drawing. Plus our celebration luncheon,” says Barbara Sedransk, Event Co-Chair.

PGA National’s Women’s Cancer Awareness Day event celebrated its 5th Anniversary, drawing more than 350 women, and presented the first Cancer Awareness Day Award to WPBF TV 25 News Anchor Kristin Hoke for her efforts of outstanding service and commitment to reporting about Cancer to our community. Susan Goldfarb was the winner of the 50/50 drawing! Susan donated half of her winnings back to WCAD for the cause! Ladies were competitive not only on the courses but during the popular raffle where there were 40 gorgeous baskets ranging from iPods to Wii’s to gourmet items for them to choose from.

The 5th Annual Cancer Awareness Day event was hosted on Thursday, February 7, 2010 at the PGA National Resort & Spa in Palm Beach Gardens. An action-packed schedule featured golf (9 & 18 holes), tennis, bridge, mahjong, croquet tournaments, and a celebration luncheon. The proceeds of this event benefited Jupiter Medical Center’s Ella Milbank Foshay Cancer Center and the Daniel E. Searle Clinical Trials Access Program. Last year’s event netted $70,000 for this important community oncology program, which provides cancer patients access to approximately 50 clinical research studies. This year’s 2010 event raised $88,105, adding to the more than $325,000 for cancer care and research in our community.

The weather was cold. Women braved the elements and came dressed as if we were playing in Chicago in February. There were no no-shows for this cause. Mittens, blankets, long-johns, snow hats and hot chocolate were commonplace.  I thought we were at a Chicago Bears game in the middle of winter.

Thank you to all for coming and supporting such a worthwhile cause & we hope you enjoyed the day. A special thanks to Michael Becker, Senior Director at BNY Mellon Wealth Management, my assistant, Sue McClay, and my better half, Veronica, who all helped with their time and photography. As always, thanks to Elaine Solomon and Judy Furlotte for all the hard work and planning that they do.

It was a real pleasure to be able to donate my time and take photographs of everyone so that the donors could have a memory of the event. CLICK HERE to see photos from the Palmer course. CLICK HERE to see photos from the Squire course. CLICK HERE to see photos from the Haig course.
