When Your iPhone Will Not Charge

A few weeks ago, my eldest son came to me after our Sunday Yoga class and asked me to take a look at his iPhone which I had given to him about a year ago. He couldn’t understand why all of the sudden it just wouldn’t charge. We tried three different good charging cables and restarted the phone twice, but no luck. The phone was physically in perfect condition. No bangs, dings, or cracks.

So, I gave him the bad news that we have to go to the Apple Store and hope they offer us a good deal on a replacement. His military security job doesn’t allow him to be without a phone so he didn’t have the choice to wait days for the repairs. He was beside himself thinking about the hundreds of dollars he was about to be forced to spend.

We arrived at the Apple Store,  put our names in and walked around the mall for an hour until it was our turn to see the Apple “Genius”. When it was finally our turn, the nice young girl happily took our broken phone and said she would take it in the back and take a look. While we waited another 10 minutes, my son tried to stay calm. He was very upset that his top of the line iPhone could stop working for no apparent reason.

When our genius came back, she said “You’re good, phone is fixed and working perfectly”. What? How? Are you kidding? She then informed my VERY HAPPY Son, that the whole problem was lint in the charging port from his jean pockets. Apparently, this is a well-known issue for men who keep their phones in their pockets. I’m Dr. Tech and I had never heard of it. You learn something new every day!

If you have this issue and don’t want to wait for an Apple Store Genius to fix it, you can often fix it yourself by using a toothpick made of wood or plastic (not metal) and carefully moving it around the charging port picking up the lint that has accumulated.

This newsletter is designed to give our clients in Admirals Cove and Tivoli Reserve insight into what’s happening in Tech as well as valuable tips to keep their Technology humming along. Please feel free to email me (BJ@EchoFineProperties.com) with your comments or subject recommendations.
